Girls 'n' Gowns Roadtrip

This weekend, it’s all about girls and gowns.

My friend Carrie and I are trekking down to Kentucky, where we will promptly demand our Regency ball gowns from my industrious seamstress of a sister, the Blonderrificus Totalus: Erica.

Okay, so we won’t ‘demand’ them–that doesn’t sound very nice. Instead, we will ply her with food and bribe her with drink and cater to her every need, because our beauty is in her hands. Will she flatter my bosom, or make it disappear like it tends to do? She wields power, though she may not know it.

Please click here to review the glory of these Jane Austen-style gowns. Here’s a sneak peak of a picture shamelessly stolen from Erica’s blog.

I like the blue sash the best, and the word ‘bum pad’ cracks me up so much that I think I must have one.

It will be a weekend of fittings, sewing, and trying to throw together some semblance of an outfit for my sweet spouse who probably doesn’t even know how he ever got conned into going to a Regency Ball in the first place.

A Regency what? Wait, when? Wait, I have to wear what?

It’s called a cravat, and it’s nothing to be frightened of, sweetie.

Yep. Gentlemen, take note on the unexpected sacrifices of marriage.

So this weekend: there will be delicious food. There will probably be massive amounts of popcorn. Possibly girly activities such as toenail painting. I may even bring myself to shed/shave/rip the hair from my winter legs. Think: grizzly bear after months of hibernation. I must do something about this if I ever hope to wear a skirt again.

And I can’t wait for the car ride with Carrie. There’s something about a long car ride with a girlfriend that invites confidences. Long, pleasant silences. Snacking, music, and emotional revelations are bound to take place.

So that’s where I’ll be. What are you all doing? And for the girls: when do you get your girl time in? I never seem to get enough of it.

I love long car rides with girlfriends. It has been a long time since I’ve had one, and your adventure sounds wonderful. A great deal of my quality time with women seems to take place via le internet or cell phone these days. A modern take on correspondence- perhaps if I slipped into a regency gown before perusing my letters in the morning I would feel more elegant about it.

OK, first off, every time I read your blog I find more in common with you – I sing too but I’m not big time like you! Just worship team at church. I love Jane Austin and that brings me to your question – my girlie time is infrequent but every year I gather my 6 favorite friends in the world and we have a 6-Chicks Party at my house. I know, I know – that’s 7 girlies but we don’t care. We drink cosmos, solve all the problems in the world and usually watch a Jane Austin movie. Last year it was Sense and Sensibility. The year before we did a side-by-side analysis of P & P. We watched Kiera Knightly’s then the 6 hour PBS version. The latter was the clear winner.

I wished you lived closer! Despite the fact I’m old enough to be your mom – well, maybe your much, MUCH older sister – I get the feeling you would be coming to 6-Chicks too! 🙂

Oh, I can’t wait to see you in your gown! That sounds like so much fun, for you at least. Your hubby is a trooper. 🙂

Looking forward to the follow-up report. Anticipation is half the fun, as you so well pointed out! Today I’m shutting off my computer (right after I read my favorite blogs) and then I’m doing some “real” writing. I miss the feel of pen and paper.

Tomorrow I’m jammin’ with some Southern gents — career musicians in their 70’s & 80’s, yeehaw! I anticipate smiling a lot. 🙂

So much fun! I’d love to participate in an event like this. Somehow I have a feeling I’d have to drag my husband kicking and screaming. The dresses are wonderful!

Sounds like oodles of fun! I hope you are having a lovely time as I type this 🙂

Hopefully, you guys had weather like Louisville had today. Matthew and I spent hours out in Cherokee Park with our dog. It was so nice to break a sweat outdoors & have the sun shinning!

Girl-time for me isn’t terribly hard to come-by since I live near much of my family and we have some wonderful friends (amazing women) here in the Louisville area that I get to have a drink or a meal with now and then. I must say though, that trips involving Sarah, Jenn, and I (whether the men accompany us or not) are probably my most-girly-girl-fun times. We usually end up cooking something delicious that Sarah heads up for us or buy coffee drinks and meander about stores, or pop in romantic comedies and wear pjs and act silly together. SIGH…2 more weeks and I’ll be up in Chicago for a weekend visit with them!!! yiiipppeee.

    Enjoy your regency ball!!!
    Can’t wait for pics 🙂

This sounds like the most awesome road trip EVER! Nail painting, bum pads, leg shaving, and Regency ball gowns….love it! I can’t wait to see a picture of you in the final product….GORGEOUS!

My roommates and I do girl time every day. Whenever I feel like procrastinating, I plop myself down in their room and we gossip away! It’s lovely.

  8. The Food Hound

I had way too much fun celebrating my birthday with the Booze Hound and some of our favorite friends 🙂 My favorite thing to do in Knoxville with my girls is go out for tea at our local tea shop (with scones, cream– you know the deal), or get some sort of mani/pedi. Don’t do it too often, but I love it! And I need one now! Badly!
